Goldstein NASA Lewis Research Center Cleveland, Ohio 44l:l5 ABSTRACT Asymptotic methods are used to describe the nonlinear selfinteraction between pairs of oblique instability modes that eventually develops when initially linear, spatially growing instability waves evolve downstream in nominally two-dimensional, unbounded or semi-bounded, laminar shear flows. The first nonlinear reaction takes place locally within a so-called "critical layer" with the flow outside this layer consisting of a locally parallel mean flow plus a pair of oblique instability waves together with an associated plane wave.

The most recent of these experiments include Kobayashi, Kohama & Takamadate (1980), Malik, Wilkinson & Orszag (1981), Kohama (1984) and Wilkinson & Malik (1985). In addition to their experimental portions, MW & 0 (1981) and W & M (1985) contain results of linear stability calculations. From a theoretical point of view, the rotating disk flow is attractive because mean flow has an exact solution.
