With the rise of feminism and especially Lesbian feminism, I found a new reality context in which to affirm my Lesbianism. During the period that I buried my Lesbianism, all of my work life, political activities, and best friendships were with women. Sexually, however, I related to men. I was a woman-identified woman in all senses, except for being a Lesbian. But I was not a Lesbian and there exists, for me, a critical disjunction between Lesbian existence and the world of female friendship or Gyn/affection that I moved in.
There has been a dearth of feminist theory that has moved beyond theories of women’s oppression to theories of women’s empowerment. Feminist theory must take into account the forces maintaining the survival of women as well as those forces maintaining the subordination of women. A theory of female friendship is meant to give form and expression to the ways in which women have been for our Selves and each other. Feminists have “fought the good fight” against patriarchy, but we may also have let the struggle against women’s oppression define too much of our theoretical agenda.
Many of the statements in The Second Sex (a work to which I and many women owe much and which was very significant in our feminist evolution) are examples of hetero-relational dogma. ”18 Such hetero-relational doctrines erase and ignore the historical and cultural diversity of women’s associations with each other. The net effect of such statements is devastating to the feminist quest for the vital and original knowledge of female friendship. These declarations proclaim that our memories are short, that the desire to remember is not important, and that, ultimately, as de Beauvoir again puts it, “man can think of himself without woman.
