The NCC “didn’t want to have a vacant wasteland in downtown Ottawa for centennial year,” says Jeanes. Moreover, there were few public washrooms in the city core, and the station’s facilities could serve the anticipated hordes of visitors. So for a year, the building became the Centennial Centre and demolition was put on hold. The plan was still to tear it down in 1968.

In 1991, the former spa rooms adjacent to the swimming pool were renovated into a fitness facility. In 1929, the Citizen reported a “shock of surprise” to see Pacific Coast aboriginal art in the Jasper Tea Room. The room, which featured columns carved into totem poles surrounding a dance floor, was designed by Edwin Holgate, considered the eighth member of the Group of Seven artists. A waterfall splashed into a pool. Subdued lighting from lamps decorated with motifs of bears, eagles and crows added atmosphere to the windowless room.
