A personal note I first 'met' Tony when we co-wrote a paper electronically for the TESOL Quarterly (Johns and Dudley-Evans 1993). We actually met at the TESOL 42 ACADEMIC WRITING IN CONTEXT Conferences — and an ESP conference In Tunisia — that followed. Of course, it was a delight working with him on English for Specific Purposes, to which he devoted his editorial skills for several years.

A systematic and useful conceptualisation of the issues involved is what is known as 'polysystem theory' (Even-Zohar 1990; Toury 1995). Briefly, the idea is that cultures are seen as networks of semiotic and linguistic systems, with literary systems comprising the totality of literary texts in a culture. The systems are complex, consisting of many subsystems, and can thus be regarded as systems of systems, or 'polysystems'.
