Hall Unilever Research Port Sunlight Laboratory Quarry Road East, Behington, Wirral, Merseyside L63 3JW ABSTRACT A general thermodynamic treatment of adsorption from mixed solvents is provided. It is designed to apply in situations where adsorbed species may be regarded as distinct from their bulk counterparts. Clausius-Clapeyron type expressions are derived which relate differential and integral enthalpies of adsorption to the temperature dependence of the adsorption equilibria concerned.

Examination ot equation ( 2 3 ) reveals that when t = 1 , the non-ideality of the surface phase is the same as for the bulk phase, while t = 0 indicates an ideal surface phase. s SURFACE ACTIVITY COEFFICIENTS 55 An adsorption isotherm can be obtained for every choice of t. According to the preceding analysis, each one will intersect the experimental isotherm at some x = £ ( t ) , £ being a function of t. By repeating the application of Rolle s theorem to a pair of model adsorption isotherms (with different values for t ) , it is found that the definition ( 2 3 ) results in a situation where all possible model isotherms for a given system have a common point at X £ = £ and x ^ = n .
