On 31 January 2002, the Boston Globe released a file that despatched shockwaves worldwide. Their findings, in response to a six-month crusade via the 'Spotlight' investigative crew, confirmed that thousands of youngsters in Boston were abused by way of Catholic monks, and that this terrible trend of behaviour have been identified - and neglected - by means of the Catholic Church. rather than retaining the group it was once intended to serve, the Church exploited its strong impact to guard itself from scandal - and blameless kids paid the price.
This is the tale from starting to finish: the predatory males who exploited the weak, the cabal of senior Church officers who coated up their crimes, the 'hush money' used to shop for the victims' silence, the survivors who stumbled on the power to inform their tale, and the Catholics the world over who have been left stunned, offended, and betrayed. this is often the tale, too, of ways they took strength again, faced their Church and known as for sweeping change.

Women in mental health treatment at six different clinics in Western New York were recruited through flyers which were given to them by their counsellors. Women who were either actively psychotic or suicidally depressed were excluded from the research. In the first instance, actively psychotic women were not expected to be able to provide reliable data for the study. In the second instance, the exclusion was based upon the concern for the women; the interview dealt with extremely sensitive issues and there was concern that the interview process might contribute to negative consequences for the women.
Allen and Epperson (1993) noted that ‘mother-blaming’ (the belief that fathers have less influence than mothers on the development of children) has led some researchers to focus on mothers in child maltreatment research. g. using a knife or gun on the child) were higher for fathers (Straus et al. 1980), suggesting that one parent may be more important than the other in understanding the links between experiences of child abuse and the development of adulthood problems in women. Unfortunately, most research has failed to control for gender of the parent in examining these associations.
Further, these same experiences of childhood maltreatment have then be found to relate to the development of adulthood alcohol problems for women, placing the next generation of children at risk from experiences of childhood maltreatment, thereby perpetuating the inter-generational cycle of childhood maltreatment and alcohol problems. Other studies have found similar links for men. It is incumbent upon policy-makers and service providers to end this intergenerational cycle. First, there needs to be sufficient attention and resources provided for the prevention of childhood maltreatment.
